Introduction

Fiat has announced that production of the Fiat 500e will be paused for a month starting from 13 September due to low demand. This decision is a result of the challenging conditions faced by all electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in the European market.

Sales Slump in European EV Market

Fiat’s parent company, Stellantis, has attributed the decline in sales to the “deep difficulties experienced in the European EV market by all producers.” According to Jato Dynamics, Fiat sold 74,885 units of the Fiat 500 (both petrol and electric variants) in Europe between January and July, representing a 24% decrease compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the market share of EVs in Europe dropped to 13.5% in July 2023, down from 14.6%.

Challenges in the EV Market

Jato analyst Felipe Munoz highlighted the lack of clarity surrounding incentives and the future of EVs as a barrier to consumer adoption. He also mentioned the low residual value of EVs as a contributing factor to the decline in sales. These challenges have prompted Fiat to explore alternative options.

The New Fiat 500 Ibrida

In response to slow sales of the Fiat 500e and the upcoming end of sales for the old petrol 500 due to new cybersecurity regulations, Fiat is developing the new 500 Ibrida. This model is essentially the 500e retrofitted with a mild-hybrid petrol engine. The 500 Ibrida will serve as a crucial transitional vehicle for Fiat as it navigates the slower-than-expected shift to selling exclusively electric cars.

Fiat’s CEO on the Current Realities

Fiat CEO Olivier François acknowledged the unexpected challenges faced by the industry, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and shortages of raw materials. He also expressed disappointment in the European society’s response to sustainable solutions. Despite these realities, Fiat remains committed to finding innovative solutions.

Investment in Battery Development

As part of its efforts to enhance the Fiat 500e, Fiat is investing €100 million (£84m) in the development of a new battery. This investment aims to significantly increase the range of the 500e while reducing costs.

With the introduction of the 500 Ibrida and ongoing advancements in battery technology, Fiat is determined to overcome the current challenges and continue its journey towards a sustainable future.
