Fiat to Integrate Charging Cables into Electric Cars

Fiat charging cable

Introduction

Fiat has announced plans to integrate charging cables into the bodywork of its next generation electric vehicles (EVs), starting with the upcoming Grande Panda in 2025. This innovative solution aims to enhance the user-friendliness of EVs and eliminate the inconvenience of handling dirty charging cables.

Revolutionary Charging Solution

The charging cables will be stored behind a panel on the front fascia of the Grande Panda EV. Fiat describes this approach as a novel way of “reinventing” charging. By integrating retractable cables into the car’s bodywork, Fiat aims to provide a more seamless and convenient charging experience for EV owners.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Fiat parent company Stellantis, emphasized the importance of this solution, stating, “We are coming up with a solution not to put the charging cable in the mud. You have these fantastic cars – full of technology, great materials, nice trims – and the first thing you do is you put the cable on the ground, and it’s dirty and you throw it back in your trunk. That’s not very high technology. If you look at vacuum cleaners, they found a better solution.”

Charging Capabilities

The integrated AC cable in the Grande Panda can charge at speeds of up to 7.4kW. This means it can add approximately 120 miles of range to the Panda’s 44kWh battery in just 4 hours and 10 minutes. However, it’s important to note that the front-mounted charging cable is not designed for rapid charging due to cooling requirements. For faster charging speeds of up to 100kW, the car features a separate DC charging port positioned on the side.

Affordable Electric Option

The Grande Panda, based on the Smart Car platform, is expected to be one of the most affordable electric cars on the market. With pricing starting at less than £22,000, it offers an accessible option for consumers looking to transition to electric mobility.

Overall, Fiat’s integration of charging cables into the bodywork of its EVs demonstrates the brand’s commitment to improving the user experience and making electric vehicles more convenient and user-friendly.
