Ford and VW Introduce Innovative Warning System to Protect Cyclists from Door Collisions

Preventing Dooring Accidents: Ford and Volkswagen Introduce Safety Features for Cyclists

As a cycling enthusiast, I understand the anxiety of riding alongside parked cars, never knowing if a door might suddenly open in my path. Fortunately, Ford and Volkswagen are addressing this concern by implementing measures to protect cyclists from potential “dooring” accidents.

Ford’s Exit Warning System

Ford is introducing the Exit Warning system initially in European delivery vans like the Transit Custom and the Tourneo Custom. However, certain passenger vehicles such as the Explorer and the Mustang will also be equipped with this safety feature.

“We recognize the challenges faced by delivery drivers, especially during this time of the year,” says Hans Schep, the general manager of Ford Pro Europe. “By offering Exit Warning on the all-new Transit Custom, we aim to enhance safety for Ford Pro drivers and other road users.”

Volkswagen’s Safety Measures

Volkswagen is also implementing a similar technology in Europe, primarily targeting passenger vehicles like the new Tiguan, Passat, Golf, ID.4, and ID.5. These vehicles will illuminate their side mirrors upon detecting an approaching bicycle when a door is being opened. Additionally, they will emit a chime to provide an auditory warning to the door opener.

Furthermore, the new VW ID.7 sedan takes safety a step further. In addition to visual and audio warnings, the car can prevent the door from opening if someone disregards the warnings. Although the door remains unopenable for a short period, the system continues to operate for up to three minutes even after the EV has been turned off.

Enhancing Cyclist Safety

The implementation of these new safety features utilizes existing technology in the vehicles, making them both innovative and impactful. In the UK alone, it is estimated that over 500 cyclists are injured in dooring incidents annually. With delivery vehicles making numerous stops each day, these safety measures provide valuable assistance to drivers and cyclists alike.
