Ford Delays 2025 Models to Prevent Quality Issues and Recalls

As Ford introduces new processes to reduce recalls, the launch of the updated 2025 Ford Explorer, Bronco Sport, and Maverick models has been delayed. The carmaker will now hold new vehicles for up to six weeks to perform quality checks before sending them to dealers and customers.

Ford’s Recall Prevention Strategy

  • Ford avoided a dozen recalls by holding back 2024 F-150s for six weeks to inspect them thoroughly.
  • In 2023, Ford issued more recalls in the U.S. than any other manufacturer.

Chief executive Jim Farley revealed during Ford’s recent first-quarter earnings call that this new approach was implemented earlier this year for the updated F-150. By conducting rigorous quality checks after production, Ford aims to prevent issues like assembly problems and software glitches that could lead to recalls.

Quality Inspections and Results

Inspections on the F-150 revealed potential issues like improperly installed wiring harnesses that could cause instrument cluster malfunctions. Now, the same thorough quality inspections will be applied to the Ford Explorer, Bronco Sport, and Maverick models set to arrive later this year.

While these additional inspections may impact revenues in the short term, Farley believes that Ford will benefit from fewer recalls and lower warranty costs in the long run. The carmaker has already seen a 10% increase in quality in its 2024 models, bringing its defect rate in line with the industry average.

Looking Towards the Future

Ford’s goal is to catch up with industry leaders like Toyota in terms of recall prevention. Analysts suggest that while Ford is making progress, addressing design and engineering issues in new models is crucial to long-term success.
