The Success of the Ford Kuga

Since its launch, the third-generation Ford Kuga has proven to be a major success for the brand in Europe. Introduced in 2019 as part of Ford’s strategy to dominate the SUV market, the Kuga quickly became the brand’s top-selling SUV. With its practicality, impressive underpinnings borrowed from the Ford Focus, and advanced plug-in hybrid technology, the Ford Kuga has won over customers who were considering competitors like the Nissan Qashqai, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Peugeot 3008. In this in-depth road test, we examine whether the new Ford Kuga has what it takes to climb even higher in the rankings.

The Ford Kuga Line-Up

The Ford Kuga offers a versatile range of powertrain options to suit different driver preferences. Alongside conventional internal combustion models, there are also electrified plug-in hybrid variants available.

The entry-level model features a 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. With 147bhp and 177lb ft of torque, this version delivers a 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.7 seconds.

For those seeking electrification, there is the 2.5-litre Duractc full-hybrid option. With 187bhp and 147lb ft of torque, this model is equipped with a CVT automatic gearbox and achieves a 0-62mph time of 9.1 seconds.

At the top of the range is the 2.5-litre Duratec plug-in hybrid, which boasts 221bhp, 147lb ft of torque, and an impressive electric-only range of up to 40 miles. This variant has become the most popular choice among buyers, accounting for a third of all sales. Its favorable BIK rating and potential cost savings on the road contribute to its popularity.

While a diesel option was initially available, Ford discontinued it by the end of 2021 due to low sales.

Ford Kuga Specification Levels

The Ford Kuga is offered in six specification levels, allowing customers to choose the one that best suits their preferences and needs. The options include:

  • Titanium Edition
  • ST Edition
  • ST-Line X
  • Black Package
  • Graphite Tech
  • Vignale

With its SUV practicality, Ford Focus underpinnings, and advanced plug-in hybrid technology, the Ford Kuga continues to impress customers and compete with popular rivals in the market. Its updated exterior design, spacious interior, and range of powertrain options make it a compelling choice for those in search of a versatile and efficient SUV.
