Ford Mustang Recall Expands to F-150s and SUVs, More Vehicles to Steer Themselves

Ford Extends Recall to Include More Models

Overview

Ford has expanded a recent recall that was initially affecting 2022-2023 Mustang models to include earlier model-year Mustangs, F-150s, Expeditions, and Navigators. The recall is related to a steering torque sensor issue that can cause the wheel to turn without driver input.

Recall Details

  • The recall was first believed to only impact 2022-2023 Mustang models.
  • Dealers will need to locate customers who purchased defective Electronic Power Assist Steering gears.

Issue Description

Affected models have a secondary digital torque sensor in the steering gear that is calibrated with an inverted polarity. If the primary steering torque sensor fails, the steering wheel could start moving left and right due to unintended steering assist from the electronic power steering gear.

Recall Expansion

Ford has identified that Electronic Power Assist Steering gears were sold as service parts for various models including 2018-2023 Mustang, 2018-2020 F-150, 2018-2021 Expedition, and 2018-2021 Navigator models, totaling 7,442 units.

Resolution

Owners of impacted vehicles will be notified starting from August 5. Dealerships will contact customers who purchased the faulty parts and offer refunds for returns. The faulty component can be fixed with a software update for the Power Steering Control Module.
