Ford Mustangs Struggle to Control Ponies, Challenger Driver Unimpressed

Why Ford Mustang Drivers Need to Be More Careful on the Road

Driving a powerful car like the Ford Mustang requires experience and skill. Unfortunately, some Mustang drivers seem to lack both, as evidenced by two recent videos that have gone viral. These incidents highlight the dangers of driving a high-performance vehicle without the necessary expertise.

Incident 1: Mustang Loses Control During Burnout

In the first video, two muscle cars, a Dodge Challenger and a Ford Mustang, pull up to a stop where onlookers urge the drivers to do a burnout. The Challenger obliges readily, pumping smoke out from its rear tires while remaining stationary. The Mustang takes a different approach.

The Mustang waits for the Challenger to stop before lighting up its tires and accelerating down the road at the same time. Initially, everything seems fine, but just as the camera person begins to pan back toward the Dodge, trouble appears in the distance. The Mustang over-corrects its slide and ends up across the opposite lane, perched on the curb.

This incident highlights the importance of knowing your limits when driving a powerful car. The Mustang driver was unable to control the vehicle’s slide and ended up crashing. This could have been avoided if the driver had exercised more caution and restraint.

Incident 2: Mustang Crashes Into SUV During Turn

In the second video, a driver of a “Brand new Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition” makes a left-hand turn, gooses the throttle, gets the back end out a little, and promptly runs directly into a Chevrolet SUV at what looks to be less than 10 mph.

Only when the outcome is almost certain does the evidence show that the driver is trying to save his pony car. The sound of the engine is traded off for the sound of squealing tires just before the accident occurs. If this truly was a GT500 Heritage, and it certainly looks like one from what we can tell, it’s an expensive mistake as that car starts at $76,695.

This incident underscores the importance of being aware of your surroundings and driving defensively. The Mustang driver was unable to avoid the collision, likely due to a lack of situational awareness.

Lessons Learned

These incidents serve as a reminder that driving a high-performance car requires skill, experience, and caution. Here are some tips for Mustang drivers (and drivers of other high-performance vehicles) to stay safe on the road:

1. Know your limits: Don’t push your car beyond its capabilities. If you’re not experienced with high-performance driving, take a course to learn the necessary skills.

2. Be aware of your surroundings: Always be aware of what’s happening around you. Keep an eye out for other vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles.

3. Drive defensively: Assume that other drivers are not paying attention and be prepared to react to unexpected situations.

4. Practice restraint: Resist the urge to show off or engage in risky behavior. Remember that your safety (and the safety of others) is more important than impressing onlookers.

Conclusion

Driving a powerful car like the Ford Mustang can be exhilarating, but it also requires responsibility and caution. These recent incidents serve as a reminder that even experienced drivers can make mistakes when handling a lot of horsepower. By following these tips and driving defensively, Mustang drivers can stay safe on the road and avoid costly accidents.
