The Ford Ranger PHEV: The UK’s First Plug-In Hybrid Pick-Up

The Ford Ranger PHEV has been unveiled as the UK’s first plug-in hybrid pick-up truck. Designed to cater to the needs of small- and medium-sized business owners, this electrified Ranger comes with a range of chassis and technology upgrades, an impressive EV-only range, and a significant performance boost.

Scheduled for production in 2024, with deliveries set to begin in early 2025, the Ford Ranger PHEV is only the second zero-emission-capable pick-up truck confirmed for the UK market, joining the all-electric Maxus T90EV.

Ford has made sure that the electrified Ranger matches the capabilities of its combustion-powered counterpart. It boasts a one-tonne payload, a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, and the highest torque figure among all the models in the Ranger lineup. Although precise figures have not been disclosed by Ford, it is expected to outperform even the 288bhp V6-engined Ford Ranger Raptor.

Powering the Ranger PHEV is Ford’s 2.3-litre Ecoboost four-cylinder petrol engine, which is complemented by a “relatively large” electric motor. This combination is likely to deliver a total output that surpasses any pure-combustion Ranger model. While the exact size of the electric motor’s battery has not been revealed, Ford has stated that it will provide an electric-only range of “more than” 27 miles. For comparison, the Ford Kuga PHEV, which offers a similar electric-only range, utilizes a 14.4kWh battery. The Ranger’s battery will support AC charging only.

Unlike the US-market Ford F-150 Lightning, which is fully electric, Ford opted for a PHEV powertrain for the Ranger. According to Matt Reilly, global chief strategist for the Ranger platform, this decision was made to cater to off-road use without relying on charging infrastructure. Additionally, it ensures compliance with tightening emissions regulations and EU green zone requirements.

The Ranger PHEV offers four driving modes for drivers to choose from. EV Auto mode allows the engine to kick in when necessary, EV Now mode uses electric power exclusively, EV Later mode utilizes the engine only to save the electric charge, and EV Charge mode employs part of the engine as a generator to charge the battery while driving.

To accommodate the additional weight of the hybrid system, Ford has reinforced the chassis and suspension of the Ranger PHEV. The engine and steering have also been recalibrated to provide a lighter feel while maintaining similarity to the current model.

Targeting small- and medium-sized business owners, the Ranger PHEV comes equipped with Pro Power, an on-board generator with three interior power outlets. This feature proves useful on remote worksites or during camping trips. While it is expected to be a standard feature, Ford will confirm this closer to the vehicle’s market launch in 2024.

The model also includes geofencing technology, which automatically detects when the vehicle enters a low-emission zone and switches to electric power. It then reverts to the default EV Auto mode upon exiting the zone.

Ford has not disclosed pricing details for the Ranger PHEV but has assured customers that it will be competitively priced while maintaining its values and capabilities. It remains unclear whether a hybrid version of the entry-level single-cab Ranger will be introduced.

When asked about the possibility of a hybrid version of the hardcore Ranger Raptor, Ford commercial vehicle marketing manager Chris Rushton stated that it has not been ruled out. He emphasized that Ford will ensure the availability of the PHEV option on globally popular derivatives, with a particular focus on European customers.

In conclusion, the Ford Ranger PHEV is set to revolutionize the pick-up truck market in the UK. With its impressive capabilities, extensive electric range, and advanced features, it offers a compelling option for business owners seeking a sustainable and powerful vehicle. As Ford continues to prioritize innovation and sustainability, the Ranger PHEV is a testament to their commitment to meeting the evolving needs of their customers.
