Ford Recalls 500K F-150 Trucks for Downshift Issue

Ford Recalls Over 550,000 2014 F-150 Trucks for Safety Concerns

Owners of the 2014 Ford F-150 are being urged to check if their trucks are part of a recent recall affecting over half a million units. The recall is due to potential safety issues related to the transmission and backup lighting system.

Transmission Software Calibration Needed

The majority of the recalled trucks require a software calibration to prevent unexpected shifting into first gear. This flaw poses a significant safety risk and needs immediate attention from owners.

Backup Light Functionality Update

Additionally, a separate recall has been issued for a few hundred 2021 F-150s that require a software update to restore backup light functionality. This issue arose after a body module update caused the problem.

Details of the Recall

The recall affects 552,188 trucks from the 2014 model year, all equipped with the 6R80 six-speed automatic gearbox. The issue involves an intermittent loss of the transmission Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), leading to unintended downshifting into first gear.

Ford has received 482 reports related to unexpected downshifting, with two reports of injuries and one accident attributed to the issue. The automaker is urging affected owners to visit their dealers for a software update to address the potential safety hazard.

Customer Reports Highlight Severity of Issue

Reports from customers and forums illustrate the severity of the problem, with instances of trucks downshifting unexpectedly at high speeds, posing a significant risk to both drivers and other road users.

Take Action Now

If you own a 2014 Ford F-150 or a 2021 model affected by these recalls, it is crucial to contact your dealer immediately to schedule a software update. Ensuring the safety and functionality of your vehicle is paramount, and addressing these issues promptly can prevent accidents and injuries.
