Ford Teases New Mustang Dark Horse R for Racing

Ford Performance is generating excitement among car enthusiasts with the upcoming unveiling of the Mustang Dark Horse R. Taking advantage of the buzz surrounding the social media platform Threads, Ford teased the new track variant of the seventh-generation Mustang. Positioned above the Dark Horse S and below the GT4 and GT3 racers, the Dark Horse R promises to deliver an exhilarating racing experience.

The teaser image provides a glimpse of the rear end of the Dark Horse R, showcasing its production-spec design with the addition of a visible roll-cage inside the cabin. The image also features the new logo of Ford Performance, accompanied by blue, red, and white graphics that could potentially be replicated in the model’s presentation livery.

While the teaser image leaves much to the imagination, Ford had previously previewed all six racing variants of the new Mustang in September 2022. This gives us a good idea of what to expect from the Dark Horse R. Unlike its sibling, the Dark Horse S, which caters to weekend track day enthusiasts, the Dark Horse R will be homologated for racing use.

One of the key upgrades for the Dark Horse R will be a revised aerodynamics package. This will include a prominent front splitter and an adjustable rear wing, both designed to generate increased downforce. Additionally, the quad-pipe exhaust system will provide a more aggressive sound, as it won’t need to comply with production car noise and emission regulations. Other distinguishing features will include bonnet pins, tow hooks, and racing wheels.

Inside the cabin, the Dark Horse R will feature a stripped-out interior. Alongside the FIA-approved roll cage, drivers can expect a single bucket seat, a quick-release steering wheel, a fire extinguisher, and a custom panel for the knobs and switches. Under the bonnet, power will come from a Coyote V8 engine. While it remains uncertain if it will exceed the 500 horsepower (373 kW / 507 PS) of the standard Dark Horse, the chassis setup will be specifically tailored for the track. This will involve stiffer and lowered suspension with Multimatic DSSV dampers, as well as stronger brakes.

All the details about the Ford Mustang Dark Horse R will be revealed on July 27. Car enthusiasts and racing fans alike are eagerly awaiting this unveiling, as it promises to be an exciting addition to the Mustang lineup. The Dark Horse R will offer a thrilling racing experience, combining power, aerodynamics, and track-focused enhancements to deliver an adrenaline-fueled performance.
