Introduction

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Chinese automotive giants Geely and Nio have joined forces to develop battery-swappable electric cars. This partnership aims to simplify EV ownership for drivers while promoting environmental sustainability.

The Vision

The ultimate objective of this partnership is to create electric vehicles that are compatible with each other’s battery-swapping systems. This means that Geely and Nio vehicle owners will be able to utilize the same batteries and access shared battery-swapping stations.

Nio’s Power Swap Stations

Nio’s innovative Power Swap Stations, which can replace a battery pack in under five minutes, are set to arrive in the UK soon. With over 1,300 stations in China and 13 stations across Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany, Nio is already leading the way in battery-swapping technology.

Geely’s Contribution

Geely, known for its subsidiaries including Volvo and Zeekr, as well as its 50% stake in Smart, currently operates around 300 battery-swapping stations in China. Geely is the second automaker, after Changan Automobile, to partner with Nio for battery-swapping technology.

A Collaborative Approach

Geely and Nio have adopted a “co-investment, co-construction, shared, co-operative” model for their partnership, as stated in a joint press release. This approach emphasizes the shared commitment to revolutionizing the electric vehicle industry.

The Benefits of Battery Swapping

Battery swapping has long been hailed as a solution to address range anxiety, alleviate pressure on charging networks, and reduce electric vehicle prices. Swapping batteries is estimated to cost similar to using a Tesla Supercharger.

From a driver’s perspective, the process is simple. Instead of waiting for your vehicle to charge at a charging station, you can quickly swap your depleted battery for a fully charged one. Nio offers the option to purchase or lease batteries, both of which are compatible with their swapping stations.

Nio’s third-generation Power Swap Stations, already operational in China and now being produced in Hungary for Europe, can replace a battery pack in under five minutes. Other automakers such as MG, Fisker, and Maxus also have plans to incorporate battery-swapping technology in their future models.

By embracing battery-swapping technology, Geely and Nio are driving the future of electric vehicle ownership, making it more convenient and sustainable for drivers worldwide.
