Genesis Withdraws G70 and GV80 from UK Market

Genesis, the premium brand owned by Hyundai, has made the decision to pull its G70 saloon and GV80 SUV from the UK market. These models will not be reintroduced in their current internal combustion engine (ICE) forms. The withdrawal also extends to the European market, although the vehicles will still be available for configuration in Asia and the US.

Low Sales Prompted the Decision

The G70 and GV80 struggled to gain traction in the UK, with only around 200 units of each model sold since their launch three years ago. In comparison, BMW sold 25,000 units of the X5, a rival to the GV80, and 67,000 units of the 3 Series, which is similar in size to the G70.

Potential Return with Hybrid Power

While there are no immediate plans for the G70 and GV80 to return to the UK market, there is a possibility that they could come back in the future if Genesis decides to introduce new model generations. The brand recently revised its strategy to include the development of hybrid powertrains, indicating the potential for a new G70 and GV80.

Genesis’ Commitment to Electrification

Genesis remains committed to its plans of becoming a leader in the era of electrification. Although the brand initially announced a focus on electric vehicles (EVs) from 2025, it now acknowledges the importance of hybrid models in the transition towards full electrification. Further details regarding upcoming hybrid powertrains from Genesis will be announced at a later date.

Challenges in the UK Market

Since its arrival in the UK in 2021, Genesis has faced difficulties in generating traction. Sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the brand sold only 649 cars between January and July this year, a 23.7% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Genesis’s market share also dropped from 0.08% to 0.06%.

However, it is worth noting that Genesis’s EVs have been more successful than its ICE cars. In 2020, nearly 80% of the brand’s sales were electric, with the GV60 SUV accounting for around half of the total sales.

Genesis Expands Dealer Network

Last year, Genesis merged its UK operations with parent company Hyundai UK, resulting in an expanded dealer network. The brand went from having three flagship ‘studio’ stores to 14 sites across the country, benefiting from Hyundai’s larger infrastructure.

Genesis’s decision to withdraw the G70 and GV80 from the UK market reflects its commitment to adapt to market conditions and consumer demand. As the brand continues its journey towards electrification, the introduction of hybrid models could play a significant role in its future offerings.
