While EV sales saw a decline, the overall car sales market in Germany grew by 5.4% in the first half of 2024. Brands like BYD stood out with a remarkable growth of 427%. On the other hand, luxury carmakers such as Audi and Mercedes faced a decline in sales, while budget-friendly brands like Seat thrived.

Tesla’s Sales Plunge

Tesla, a prominent player in the EV market, witnessed a sharp decline in sales in Germany. From January to June, Tesla’s sales dropped to 21,249 units, marking a significant decrease of 41.6% compared to the previous year. The June figures were even more alarming, with a 42.2% decrease in sales.

Despite the decline in EV sales, the German car market as a whole showed positive growth. Total passenger car sales increased by 5.4% to 1.47 million in the first half of 2024. In June alone, car sales improved by 25.8% compared to the previous year.

While some brands like BMW, VW, and Porsche experienced growth in sales, others like Audi and Mercedes faced declines. Seat’s impressive sales growth of 37.9% and Skoda’s increase of 24.9% highlighted the success of certain brands in the German market.
