Changes to the EV Tax Credit System

The EV tax credit system has undergone changes that disqualify many popular EVs, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, from receiving the available allowance. These changes are designed to penalize cars with a Chinese connection.

Ford’s Incentive for the Mach-E

Despite the disappearance of the U.S. government’s subsidy, Ford is offering a $7,500 discount on the Mustang Mach-E lease. This incentive is available on 2023 model-year Mach-Es until April 2 of this year. Ford Credit is also offering lease rates close to 0 percent APR in various U.S. regions.

Lease vs. Finance

According to Cars Direct, Ford’s payment calculator suggests that you can lease a Mach-E for 36 months with zero deposit for only $465. In comparison, an 84-month conventional finance payment deal would cost $653. This makes the lease option significantly more affordable.

Revised Treasury Rules

The revised treasury rules state that EVs with battery components made or assembled by companies based in China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran are not eligible for any part of the tax credit. To qualify for the full $7,500 credit, an EV must have at least 50 percent of its battery components sourced from the U.S., Mexico, or Canada.

Available Tax Credits

Currently, only 13 distinct BEVs and PHEVs are eligible for tax credits under the new rules. However, automakers whose cars no longer qualify are working on making sourcing changes to comply with the regulations.
