Ginetta Unveils Akula: A Road-Legal Supercar with 600bhp V8 and Manual Gearbox

Leeds-based car manufacturer, Ginetta, has officially revealed the Akula, a powerful road-going supercar equipped with a 6.4-litre atmospheric V8 engine and the option for a manual gearbox. This highly anticipated vehicle is a result of the transformation of the 2019 concept of the same name, with the word “Akula” meaning “shark” in Russian. The two-seat coupé boasts an aggressive exterior design inspired by Le Mans racing technology, while also offering an impressive 473-litre boot space, surpassing that of the Ford Puma.

Ginetta’s aim with the Akula is to create a “continent-crosser” that showcases motorsport engineering in its purest form. Weighing just 1190kg, the car’s lightweight construction is primarily attributed to its carbonfibre monocoque and subframe.

Power and Performance

The Ginetta Akula is powered by a front-mid mounted 6.4-litre V8 engine, generating an impressive 600bhp and 494lb ft of torque at 5100rpm. With this power, the Akula can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 2.9 seconds, matching the speed of the Maserati MC20. The rear wheels of the Akula are equipped with Pirelli P Zero rubber and power is transmitted through either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox or a six-speed manual with a triple-plate clutch.

Ginetta has invested significant effort into optimizing the Akula’s dynamics. The placement of the V8 engine allows for a balanced 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, enabling the installation of longer wishbones. This configuration allows engineers to create an adjustable suspension setup that delivers an unparalleled and uncompromised handling experience.

Impressive Features

The Akula is equipped with 360mm front and rear discs, with the option of steel or carbon-ceramic discs for those who choose the Race Pack. The Race Pack also includes six-point racing harnesses, Ginetta racing decals, and a full race suit (excluding helmet). Inside the car, drivers will find a carbon-fibre multifunction racing wheel, a Ginetta-developed infotainment screen, and a wireless charger.

Ginetta plans to produce only 20 units of the Akula, with each car priced at £275,000 before local taxes. This extraordinary supercar joins Ginetta’s existing road car range, which includes the recently launched G56 GTR sports car and the “remastered” 1960s G10.

Ginetta’s CEO, Lawrence Tomlinson, expressed his excitement about the Akula, stating, “During the 20 years I’ve owned Ginetta, there have been countless highlights. None, though, surpass the launch of the Akula.”
