GM and LG Begin Production of Battery Cells at Second Joint Venture Plant

General Motors (GM) has partnered with LG Energy Solution to establish three joint battery factories in the United States. Additionally, GM is planning a fourth battery factory in collaboration with Samsung SDI. The Spring Hill site is currently supplying battery cells to the Cadillac Lyriq.

Manufacturing Begins at Spring Hill Plant

The joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solution has initiated the production of electric vehicle battery cells at the second of four joint plants set to open across the United States. The new plant, operated by Ultium Cells, is located in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and shipped its first battery cells on March 21. This marks an important milestone for GM as it continues to invest in battery production facilities.

Increased Production Capacity

Once fully operational, the Spring Hill facility will have the capacity to produce 50-gigawatt hours of EV batteries annually. The cells produced at this site are currently being shipped to nearby manufacturing plants that handle the production of the Cadillac Lyriq. As production ramps up, shipments to other GM plants will also begin.

Future Plans for Battery Production

GM has invested over $7 billion in three Ultium Cells battery plants and plans to start manufacturing at a third site near Lansing, Michigan, in the fourth quarter. The company is also working on a fourth battery plant in partnership with Samsung SDI, with an expected opening in 2026. GM believes that producing batteries in the U.S. and utilizing the shared Ultium platform will help make its electric vehicles profitable.
