GMC Canyon AT4X Gets 3 Letters with Performance Boost

Midsize trucks with an off-road focus are having a moment, with Ford’s Raptor-ized Ranger and Toyota’s upcoming next-gen Tacoma making waves. General Motors is also getting in on the action, with a range of dirt-road variants for its Colorado/Canyon trucks. The latest addition is what appears to be an AEV (American Expedition Vehicles) variant of the already-capable Canyon AT4X.

The AT4X is the top-of-the-line Canyon model, featuring DSSV Multimatic dampers that were first introduced on the Chevy Colorado ZR2 five years ago. GMC dealers now have access to an equivalent model, complete with the trick suspension and a host of other off-road features. Adding the AEV moniker takes things even further, with stamped-steel bumpers, accessory winch capability, extra-stout steel bash plates, and special badges. Aggressive wheels and tires complete the package.

Those familiar with GM’s previous off-road efforts will remember the burly Bison package for the last-gen Colorado. This added similar off-road items to the ZR2 trim, and was the result of a collaboration between GM and Dave Harrington, the boss of American Expedition Vehicles. The Bison name then migrated to other pickups in the Chevy lineup.

It didn’t take long for an equivalent effort to appear in GMC showrooms, simply called AEV. It’s likely that GMC dealers were clamoring for their own version of the Bison, and a covered prototype was recently on display at a GMC event. The Canyon AT4X AEV will complete a trifecta of burly off-roaders for GMC, joining the Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD.

Overall, it’s an exciting time for fans of midsize trucks with off-road capabilities. With new models and variants from major manufacturers like Ford, Toyota, and GM, there are more options than ever before for those who want to tackle tough terrain. The AEV variant of the Canyon AT4X is just the latest example of this trend, and it’s sure to be a hit with off-road enthusiasts.
