GM’s Surprising Decision

In a surprising move, General Motors (GM) has announced that it will not be participating in the Super Bowl 2024 advertising lineup. While the automaker has not provided a specific reason for this decision, a spokesperson stated that they continuously evaluate their media strategies to align with their business priorities.

A Brief Hiatus

This is not the first time GM has taken a break from Super Bowl commercials. The company previously sat out after their bankruptcy and skipped the end of the last decade. However, they returned in 2020 and ran commercials for the next three years.

Shift in Focus

GM’s recent Super Bowl ads have heavily promoted electric vehicles (EVs). Despite having new EV models on the horizon, such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and GMC Sierra EV, enthusiasm for electric vehicles seems to have softened. This is further evidenced by GM’s decision to delay production of several EV models.

Uncertain Future for Super Bowl Ads

While GM has confirmed its absence from Super Bowl 2024, it remains unclear whether other automakers, such as Stellantis, will also sit out. Stellantis, known for its memorable Super Bowl commercials, has not commented on its plans for the event.

The Cost of Participation

The Super Bowl is scheduled to take place on February 11 in Las Vegas. Attending the event comes with a hefty price tag, but it pales in comparison to the cost of a 30-second ad slot, which is estimated to be around $7 million. As the event draws closer, more details about the lineup and participating brands are expected to emerge.
