GM Plans to Boost EV Production in 2024 with Software and Automation

Automakers have made significant investments in electric vehicle (EV) development and production. However, reaching the market share goals set by these companies will require even more effort and funding. General Motors (GM) has already invested more than many of its competitors, but the automaker acknowledges the challenges it faces in the future. CEO Mary Barra has revealed that GM plans to enhance production in 2024 through the use of software and automation.

Addressing Manufacturing Automation Issues

Barra stated, “We’re a bit disappointed this year that we were constrained by the automation to build battery modules. This is not a fundamental issue with Ultium, but rather a manufacturing automation problem that we are actively working on. We expect to resolve it by the middle of next year and make continuous improvements every quarter.”

GM has several new EV models in the pipeline and ensuring successful launches is crucial. Apart from having sufficient supply, maintaining quality is also essential.

EV Adoption as a Non-Linear Growth

Barra emphasized that GM never viewed EV adoption as a linear progression. Despite experiencing a slight plateau, the growth in EV sales has continued. General Motors is not alone in facing production challenges. Ford recently encountered issues with vehicle fires and had to overcome them before resuming production of the F-150 Lightning to meet demand.
