Grassi 044S: A 640-HP Tribute to Lancia Delta S4 Stradale

Introducing the Grassi 044S: A Contemporary Interpretation of the Iconic Lancia Delta S4 Stradale

Milan-based company Scuderia Grassi has announced the unveiling of their inaugural limited-production model, the Grassi 044S, at the 2023 Milano Monza Motor Show (MiMo). The 044S is a contemporary interpretation of the iconic 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, featuring bespoke bodywork and a powerful 640 hp rear-mounted engine.

Limited Production Run

Interestingly, the 044S is not just a concept car. Scuderia Grassi has announced plans for a limited production run of only 44 units. While specific pricing and delivery dates have not been disclosed, this exclusive model is sure to be highly sought after by car enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the 044S was entrusted to Giuseppe Armano, a former designer at Alfa Romeo. Armano successfully retained the iconic styling cues of the S4, such as the round headlights, the Lancia grille, and the prominent side intakes. However, the bodywork of the 044S exhibits a more rounded shape, accompanied by wider fenders and enhanced aero components. The 044S also boasts custom-made 19-inch alloy wheels with a multi-spoke design that pays homage to the iconic Delta Integrale Evoluzione, adding a nostalgic touch. Furthermore, the quad tailpipes of the 044S are exclusive to this model.

Dimensions

The Grassi 044S measures 4,180 mm (164.6 inches) long, 2,000 mm (78.7 inches) wide, and 1.267 mm (49.9 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm (102.4 inches). This means it is longer, wider, and shorter than the Delta S4. Judging from the blacked-out windows, the 044S that was exhibited in Milan is a full-scale static model rather than a functional prototype.

Powertrain

Although Scuderia Grassi does not disclose the specific origins of the underpinnings, there are similarities in certain elements, such as the greenhouse, that bear a resemblance to the Alfa Romeo Brera. The 044S features a rear-mounted biturbo 3.0-liter four-cylinder dry-sump gasoline engine, generating an impressive output of 640 hp (477 kW / 650 PS). It is worth mentioning that this powertrain is designed to comply with the Euro 5 emission standards.

Transmission and Performance

Power is transferred to all four wheels via either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed sequential gearbox with the help of a 4WD system equipped with three differentials. The target weight is between 1,100-1,200 kg (2,425-2,646 pounds) resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 1.69 kg/PS. According to the company’s estimates, the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint is achieved in 2.9 seconds, while the top speed is expected to reach 300 km/h (186 mph).

Conclusion

The Lancia Delta has been a great source of inspiration for restomods and digital concept cars by independent designers, keeping us busy until the nameplate makes its official return in electric form in 2028. However, the custom-made Grassi 044S and the ultra-expensive restomod by Automobili Amos prove that Lancia needs to act fast and bring the Delta back from the dead. With only 44 units available, the Grassi 044S is sure to be a highly coveted addition to any car collection.
