Honda Shifts Focus to SUVs, No Replacement for Honda E

Honda has announced that it will not be producing any new small electric vehicles (EVs) like the Honda E in the foreseeable future. Instead, the company will be focusing on establishing itself as an SUV-driven brand with the introduction of the new e:Ny1.

Currently, Honda’s lineup consists of seven vehicles, four of which are SUVs – the Honda CR-V, Honda ZR-V, Honda HR-V, and the recently launched electric e:Ny1. Despite the success of its smaller hybrid hatchbacks, the Civic and the Jazz, Honda has decided to follow market demand and concentrate on SUVs.

Rebecca Adamson, head of cars for Honda UK, confirmed this decision at the e:Ny1’s launch event in Norway. She stated, “There won’t be more cars the size of the Honda E. I can say that confidently. The market demand in the UK is the SUV sector, so that’s why the focus is there. It’s a market-led product line-up. As long as that’s where the market is, we will continue to be SUV driven.”

Honda is placing its hopes on the new e:Ny1 electric SUV, which joins the company’s EV lineup alongside the smaller Honda E. The brand expects the e:Ny1 to account for 22% of its sales in the UK by the end of 2024, equivalent to approximately 7500 cars.

Adamson believes that Honda is in a favorable position due to the freshness of its lineup. The oldest car in Honda’s range was launched just three years ago. She stated, “We’ve arguably had a limited range, with just four cars in the lineup. Now we’re up to seven or eight if you include the [Honda Civic] Type R and E. We now have a relatively comprehensive range but it’s still simple. There’s not a massive number of derivatives. And from a retailer perspective, there’s nothing they get excited about more than a new car launch. It’s always good to have something new to talk about and go to customers with.”

The e:Ny1 is set to open its order books later this year, with the first deliveries expected in January 2024. The SUV offers an impressive range of 256 miles from its 68.8kWh battery, paired with an electric motor that produces 201bhp and 229lb ft of torque.

Honda’s decision to shift its focus to SUVs reflects the current market demand in the UK. SUVs have become increasingly popular among consumers due to their versatility, spaciousness, and higher driving position. By aligning its product lineup with market trends, Honda aims to meet customer expectations and maintain its position as a leading automotive brand.
