Honda Odyssey and Acura RDX Steering Recall and Stop-Sale | Giga Gears

2022 Honda Odyssey and Acura RDX Steering Issue Leads to Recall

Introduction

Power tools can be a double-edged sword, as one of Honda’s suppliers, JTEKT Automotive North America, found out. By modernizing its manufacturing process with a torque gun instead of a torque wrench, the company inadvertently caused steering gearbox assemblies to be improperly fastened and cross-threaded.

Identification of the Issue

Upon discovering the problem, JTEKT Automotive North America promptly alerted Honda on November 11, 2023. Subsequent investigations revealed that the issue could impact 2023–2024 Odyssey and 2024 Acura RDX models manufactured during the summer and fall of that year.

Scope of the Recall

Although the problem only affects a total of 186 vehicles, Honda took swift action by issuing a stop sale and initiating a recall campaign for the affected Odysseys and RDXs. Fortunately, there have been no reported warranty claims, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue.

Potential Risks

The cross-threaded fasteners could allow water to penetrate the steering gear box assembly, leading to corrosion and gear binding over time. This could impair a driver’s ability to steer the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident. Owners are advised to listen for any unusual noises while turning the steering wheel as a warning sign of a developing problem.

Resolution Process

Starting on April 1, Honda will contact affected owners to schedule a visit to their nearest dealership. The electric power steering rack will be replaced with a non-defective part to rectify the issue and ensure the safety of the vehicles.

Conclusion

By proactively addressing this manufacturing flaw, Honda demonstrates its commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. Owners of the impacted Odyssey and RDX models can rest assured that the company is taking all necessary steps to resolve the steering issue promptly.
