New MG ZS to be Unveiled Next Week with Hybrid Power
MG is set to reveal the highly anticipated new ZS on August 28th, introducing a hybrid powertrain to the popular compact crossover for the first time. The new ZS will adopt the Hybrid+ powertrain that was first introduced in the new MG 3 supermini, which currently holds the title of the cheapest full hybrid available in the UK.
Hybrid Power for Enhanced Performance
The Hybrid+ powertrain combines a 101bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 107bhp electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 192bhp and 313lb ft of torque. This hybrid configuration not only enhances performance but also improves fuel efficiency, with the MG 3 achieving a combined 64.2mpg, nearly 20mpg higher than its pure-petrol predecessor.
A Refreshed Design for the Second Generation
In addition to the hybrid powertrain, the new ZS will also receive a makeover for its second generation. The updated design brings it in line with the new MG HS SUV, giving it a more modern and appealing look. Teaser images reveal a fresh front end with a new grille, redesigned headlights, and the MG logo moved to the nose.
Expected Pricing and Availability
While the current ZS is known for its affordability, with a starting price of £18,320, the new hybrid model is expected to have a higher price point. The previous generation of the MG 3 saw an increase of £4000 between generations, suggesting a similar trend for the ZS. Additionally, MG is likely to offer the ZS with a pure-petrol powertrain after the initial launch.
Future Plans for the ZS
MG has confirmed that a new generation of the ZS EV is in the works and is expected to be released in 2026. However, the current ZS EV will continue to be available alongside the new hybrid model until then. The upcoming ZS EV will have a different platform and design, drawing inspiration from the MG 4 EV hatchback.
