Hyundai Elantra N: Upcoming Model May Feature Bigger Engine

The Next Hyundai Elantra N May Receive a Larger Engine

The Hyundai Elantra N, known for its sprightly and engaging performance, could be getting an engine upgrade in its next iteration. According to Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s senior technical advisor, the next-generation Elantra will likely accommodate a larger engine than the current 2.0-liter turbo found in the N model.

Potential for a 2.5-Liter Turbo

Biermann stated in a recent interview with CarExpert that he ensured the Elantra could handle a 2.5-liter turbo engine before leaving his position at Namyang. He expressed confidence that the larger engine would fit and meet the needs of markets like Australia and the United States. However, he also mentioned that markets focused on electric vehicles may not prioritize combustion cars.

While the 2.5-liter turbo could potentially comply with emissions regulations in certain countries, Hyundai might need to find alternative solutions for markets with stricter regulations. This could result in different versions of the Elantra N being available in select markets or the cancellation of a hypothetical 2.5-liter variant due to logistical challenges.

Performance Comparison

The current Elantra N features a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. In comparison, models like the Sonata N Line and Kia K5 GT utilize a 2.5-liter engine that produces 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. While both engines offer impressive performance, the Elantra N stands out with its track-day aspirations and engaging driving experience.

Although the Honda Civic Type R is often considered the better all-around car, the Elantra N’s potential engine upgrade could help Hyundai close the performance gap. With a lower starting price, Hyundai could attract more enthusiasts looking for a thrilling driving experience without breaking the bank.

Uncertain Future

While Biermann’s statements provide hope for a more powerful Elantra N, there are uncertainties regarding its future. The decision to continue producing an N version of the next-generation Elantra will be made within the year, considering factors such as emissions regulations and cooling requirements for track use.

Regardless of the outcome, Hyundai’s commitment to delivering exciting performance vehicles remains strong. Whether it’s an upgraded Elantra N or other models in the N lineup, enthusiasts can expect thrilling driving experiences from Hyundai in the future.
