Recall Details

  • Hyundai is recalling 12,612 Genesis Coupes from the 2010-2013 model years.
  • The vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission and an ignition lock switch that could fail.
  • This could allow the vehicle to lunge forward or backward if started in gear.

About the Genesis Coupe

Long before Genesis became a standalone luxury brand, Hyundai offered the Genesis Coupe. It was a value-focused sports car with rear-wheel drive and a powerful V6 engine.

Recall Explanation

The ignition lock switch in the affected Genesis Coupes has a return spring that could fracture due to stress from the switch’s interaction with the clutch pedal bracket. If this occurs, the ignition lock switch could become “always on,” allowing the vehicle to start without engaging the clutch. This poses a risk of unintended movement if the vehicle is started in gear without the parking brake set, brake pedal depressed, or clutch depressed.

Incidents and Injuries

While no injuries have been reported, Hyundai has identified three crashes involving these vehicles in the United States. The first incident occurred in 2012, while the other two were reported in 2014 and 2015.

Remedy

Owners will be contacted by mail and instructed to take their vehicles to a dealership, where the ignition lock switch will be replaced. In the meantime, drivers are advised to follow a starting procedure that includes engaging the parking brake, depressing the clutch, and putting the transmission into neutral before starting the vehicle.
