Hyundai Ioniq 9: A Futuristic Seven-Seater Electric SUV

Introduction

Hyundai is set to unveil its latest electric SUV, the Hyundai Ioniq 9, later this year. This seven-seater SUV is designed to compete with the Volvo EX90 and is closely related to Kia’s EV9. The Ioniq 9 is an evolution of the Seven concept, which was showcased three years ago. It was initially planned to be called the Ioniq 7, but the name was changed to avoid implying that it is inferior to the EV9.

Specifications

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 will share the same extended version of the e-GMP platform as the Kia EV9. It is expected to feature a 99.8kWh battery pack and will be available with both a 200bhp single-motor and a 378bhp dual-motor setup. The Kia EV9 offers ranges of 349 and 313 miles respectively, so similar figures can be expected for the Ioniq 9. Furthermore, there are rumors of a hot N variant, potentially using the 641bhp dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain from the Ioniq 5 N.

Design

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 will have a sleeker and more curvaceous body compared to the boxy EV9. It will feature design elements from the Seven concept, including distinctive lighting signatures and flared haunches. However, some features from the concept, such as frameless windows and rear coach doors, have been removed in favor of a more conventional design with B- and C-pillars and traditional door handles.

Interior

The interior of the Ioniq 9 will be similar to the Hyundai Santa Fe. It will have a digital instrument display and an infotainment touchscreen angled towards the driver. Physical controls for audio and climate will be retained, while less important functions will be controlled through a touch panel. The gear selector will be a twisting dial on the steering column, similar to the Santa Fe.

Release and Pricing

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 is expected to be unveiled before the end of the year, with the first units arriving on the market next year. The starting price is estimated to be between £60,000 and £70,000, making it more affordable than the Volvo EX90 by approximately £30,000.
