Hyundai Recalls Ioniq 6 Again in U.S.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Recall Due to Faulty Rear Motor-Gear Drive Unit Assemblies

Hyundai has issued a recall for two Ioniq 6 electric vehicles in the U.S. due to faulty rear Motor-Gear Drive Unit (MGDU) assemblies. The issue stems from improperly torqued bolts that could lead to a sudden loss of power.

Details of the Recall

  • The recall affects two Ioniq 6 models with faulty rear MGDU assemblies.
  • An improperly torqued bolt in the assembly could result in a sudden loss of power.
  • The impacted vehicles were manufactured between August 19, 2023, and August 21, 2023.

Impact of the Issue

A small batch of MGDU assemblies with loose differential gear bolts was mistakenly delivered to Hyundai’s Tier 1 supplier and used in production. This defect could cause a grinding noise while driving, damage to the MGDU housing, or a loss of power due to differential lock-up.

Resolution and Next Steps

Upon discovering the issue, the supplier has implemented new processes to prevent similar problems in the future. Affected owners will be notified digitally and through certified mail to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for a rear MGDU assembly replacement at no cost. Any incurred costs related to the issue will also be reimbursed.

Previous Recalls

This is not the first recall affecting the Ioniq 6 in the U.S. Earlier this year, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis recalled over 147,000 EVs, including 18,017 Ioniq 6s, due to potential power loss caused by integrated charging control unit issues.
