Tragic Incident in Rochester: Authorities Investigate Fatal Car Attack

Authorities in Rochester, New York are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred on New Year’s Day. The incident involved a car attack that resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries. The local police, along with the FBI, are searching for answers to determine the motive behind this horrific event.

Collision at Kodak Center

The incident took place around 12:50 am as approximately 1,000 people were leaving a concert at Kodak Center. The streets were crowded when a Ford Expedition collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander that was exiting a parking lot.

Rochester Police Chief David Smith stated that the impact of the collision caused the two vehicles to plow through a group of pedestrians in a crosswalk before hitting two other vehicles. A large fire broke out, taking nearly an hour to extinguish.

Tragic Consequences

The collision had devastating consequences, resulting in the deaths of two occupants in the Outlander. The driver of the Outlander survived but sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. Additionally, three pedestrians were struck, with one sustaining serious injuries.

Possible Terrorist Attack?

What makes this incident particularly alarming is the discovery that the Ford Expedition was loaded with a dozen gas containers. This raised concerns about a potential terrorist attack, prompting authorities to launch a thorough investigation.

Suspect Identified

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Michael Avery from the Syracuse area. Avery died as a result of his injuries, leaving investigators with more questions than answers. He had arrived in Rochester on December 27 and checked into a nearby hotel. On December 29, he rented the Expedition and made several purchases of gasoline and gas containers on December 30.

Premeditated Attack?

Rochester Police Chief David Smith revealed that the initial investigation suggests that Avery acted intentionally. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but conversations with family members have indicated that Avery may have been suffering from undiagnosed mental health issues.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the RPD’s Major Crimes Unit.
