Introduction

Smart is set to unveil its largest and most powerful model, the #5 SUV, on August 28th. The event will take place in Australia, a market where Smart aims to expand its presence. This will be the first official public appearance of the brand’s third model, following the release of images by China’s ministry of technology in June.

Impressive Power Output

The most notable feature of the top-rung dual-motor model is its impressive 637bhp output. This surpasses the power of the smaller #1 and #3 crossovers by over 200bhp and even exceeds the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT.

Despite its high performance, the #5 SUV does not bear the Brabus branding like its performance-focused siblings. Full performance figures have not been disclosed yet, but the top-flight variant is expected to achieve a 0-62mph time of under 3.0 seconds.

Multiple Powertrain Options

In addition to the top-rung dual-motor model, the #5 SUV will also be available in a less potent dual-motor option with 579bhp. There will also be two single-motor, rear-driven variants offering 335bhp or 358bhp.

Impressive Range and Charging Capabilities

The #5 SUV boasts an impressive range of up to 342 miles in its most efficient form, according to Smart. While the exact battery capacities have not been revealed, it has been confirmed that the longest-range variant will have over 100kWh capacity. The SUV will also feature an 800V electrical architecture, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 15 minutes.

The rear-wheel-drive models will use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) packs, while the four-wheel-drive models will utilize conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Design and Dimensions

Measuring 4705mm long, 1920mm wide, and 1705mm tall, the #5 SUV is comparable in size to the Peugeot 5008. However, it will have five seats instead of seven. The SUV’s design retains the straight-backed, blocky proportions of the concept, but with a more road-focused stance and urban appeal.

While no interior images have been released, it is expected that the final cabin will resemble the concept’s digital-heavy, minimalist arrangement.

Pricing and Production

The Smart #5 SUV will be manufactured at Geely’s facility in Xi’an, China. It is anticipated to have a starting price of around £35,000 in the UK. However, the recent imposition of new import tariffs on Chinese-made EVs in the EU raises concerns about the SUV’s viability for export. Smart is jointly owned by Mercedes-Benz and Geely.

Overall, the Smart #5 SUV promises to be an exciting addition to the electric SUV market, with its impressive power, range, and charging capabilities. Car enthusiasts and environmentally conscious consumers alike will be eagerly awaiting its official reveal in August.
