Jaguar I-Pace Recall: Addressing Fire Risk in 2019 Model Year EVs

Recall Details

  • Jaguar is recalling 2,760 I-Pace EVs from the 2019 model year due to a fire risk.
  • Despite previous software updates, three fires have been reported.
  • Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and limit battery charge to 80% until a permanent solution is available.

Background

Jaguar is recalling 2,760 I-Pace EVs from the 2019 model year due to a potential fire hazard caused by battery overheating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has instructed owners to park and charge their vehicles outside, away from structures, until the necessary repairs are completed and for an additional 30 days.

Previous Recalls and Software Limitations

Following previous recalls (H441, H459, and H471), Jaguar continued to monitor the situation. However, a small number of post-recall fire incidents were reported, leading to a review of the diagnostic software in July. It was discovered that the software did not provide sufficient protection, necessitating a further recall to mitigate the thermal overload condition.

Temporary Solution and Future Remedy

As a temporary fix, vehicles involved in the latest recall will receive updated software that limits battery charging to 80%. However, a permanent solution is still under development. Owners will be notified once the permanent remedy is available. In the meantime, the recommendation to park outside for 30 days after the repair may raise concerns among owners.
