Issues with Rear Child Protection and Collision Avoidance Systems

The latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests has awarded the Jeep Avenger, a small crossover, a “mediocre” three-star rating.

Side-Impact Protection and Autonomous Emergency Braking Criticized

The Jeep Avenger performed poorly in side-impact protection for 10-year-old rear occupants and showed unresponsiveness in its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system. Euro NCAP also highlighted the absence of a child presence detection system.

Strong Ratings for Adult and Child Occupant Protection

Despite its shortcomings, the Jeep Avenger received good ratings for overall adult and child occupant protection, scoring 79% and 70% respectively.

Lack of Ambition and Safety Concerns

Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, expressed disappointment in Jeep’s lack of ambition and emphasized the importance of safety in the car industry. He stated, “Euro NCAP will continue to highlight shortcomings in this area for the benefit of European car buyers.”

Stellantis’ Commitment to Safety

In response, Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, stated their dedication to providing customers with clean, safe, and affordable mobility. They emphasized their ongoing efforts to enhance the safety features of their vehicles and their consideration of third-party assessments in the engineering process.

Comparison to Vauxhall Mokka and Other Models

The Vauxhall Mokka, which shares the same Stellantis CMP platform as the Avenger, received a four-star rating in 2021. However, this rating is now outdated as Euro NCAP has updated its testing regimen to include stricter standards and new technologies. In the latest round of testing, the Renault Captur, Renault Symbioz, Audi Q6 E-tron, Ford Explorer, Subaru Crosstrek, Subaru Impreza, and Xpeng G6 all received favorable ratings.

Overall, the Jeep Avenger’s three-star safety rating highlights the need for improvement in rear child protection and collision avoidance systems. Car manufacturers should prioritize safety to meet the expectations of European car buyers.
