Jeep to Introduce Electric Off-Roader to Rival Land Rover Defender
Jeep is set to take on the Land Rover Defender with a powerful electric off-roader called the Recon. This move is part of Jeep’s strategy to reinvigorate its presence in Europe. The Recon, which is expected to launch in 2025, will offer a range of approximately 373 miles and boast nearly 600bhp. It will serve as an unofficial electric sibling to the iconic Jeep Wrangler.
The Recon will share its underpinnings with the Jeep Wagoneer S, another model set to debut in 2025. Alongside the already released compact Jeep Avenger, these new additions will expand Jeep’s UK lineup to seven models by the mid-2020s. Additionally, CEO Christian Meunier has hinted at a fourth EV that will provide a glimpse into the future of the brand. Teaser images suggest that this model will be positioned at the lower end of the lineup.
By 2030, Jeep plans to transition to an all-electric car brand in Europe. This commitment aligns with Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, which aims for a similar transition across its portfolio of brands.
One of the most highly anticipated models in Jeep’s upcoming lineup is the Recon, which will directly challenge the Land Rover Defender. Both the Recon and the range-topping Wagoneer S will be based on Stellantis’s new STLA Large architecture, making them among the first models to utilize this platform. While specific technical details have yet to be revealed, it has been confirmed that both models will achieve a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds.
The Recon will be manufactured in the US and initially released there before making its way to other markets. It will be positioned as a rugged off-roader, paying homage to Jeep’s heritage. Customers will have the option to choose removable doors and an open-top design, similar to the Wrangler.
According to Antonella Bruno, Jeep’s European boss, the Recon will coexist with the Wrangler in the lineup. However, the two vehicles will have slightly different sizes and positions within the range. Bruno describes the Recon as a unique car that is very boxy and capable. It will occupy a lower segment of the market compared to the Wrangler.
While the Wrangler is available as a plug-in hybrid in markets outside of the UK, it will not be offered with an electrified drivetrain in right-hand drive configurations by 2025. Bruno emphasized Jeep’s commitment to becoming a leader in 4×4 electrification globally.
Despite Jeep’s recent struggles in Europe and the UK, Bruno remains optimistic about the brand’s standing. She believes that Jeep is well-known in the UK and that customers are ready to embrace their new products, starting with the Avenger and Grand Cherokee. Bruno expressed confidence in Jeep’s ability to change its presence in the UK market and cited brands like Volkswagen and Mini as competitors they aim to conquer.
