Jeep Recalls Wrangler and Gladiator Models Due to Software Issue

Recall Details

  • Jeep is recalling Wranglers and Gladiators that can stall due to faulty software.
  • The vehicles were previously involved in another recall and the fix seems to have made the situation worse.
  • Jeep is aware of 35 field reports related to the issue, but no crashes or injuries have been reported.

Background

The Wrangler and Gladiator, two of Jeep’s most iconic models, are being recalled due to a potential loss of drive power. The recall affects a total of 94 units from the 2021 model year, all of which are believed to be affected by the software issue.

Previous Recall

In 2023, 69,201 Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators with manual transmissions were recalled due to a clutch intermediate pressure plate overheating and potentially causing fractures. As part of the fix for this issue, the vehicles received updated Powertrain Control Module software.

Current Issue

The latest recall states that the Wrangler and Gladiator may experience an “improper function” with the software’s rpm reduction feature. This can lead to engine stalling and a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers will not receive any advance warning if this occurs.

Investigation and Fix

After reports of vehicles stalling, Jeep suspended the software on June 26 and initiated an investigation. The company is aware of 35 field reports potentially related to the issue, but fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported. The fix for this software problem involves reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module with updated software to ensure the proper functioning of the RPM reduction feature.

Recall Schedule

The recall is expected to begin in the third quarter, with owners being notified in August.
