Jeep Wrangler to Offer Electric and Range-Extender Models from 2028

Next-Generation Jeep Wrangler to Feature Hybrid and Electric Powertrains

The iconic Jeep Wrangler is set to undergo a major transformation in its next-generation model, with the introduction of battery-electric and range-extender (REx) powertrains. This development marks one of the most significant changes for the American off-roader since its debut in the 1980s.

Production and Powertrain Details

According to documents released as part of Jeep parent company Stellantis’s agreement with the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), the next-generation Jeep Wrangler will enter production in 2028. The new model will be available with both battery-electric and REx powertrains.

The current generation of the Wrangler already includes a plug-in hybrid variant, the 4xe, although it is not currently available in the UK. However, the upcoming model will receive upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrains in 2025 before being phased out in 2028.

The new J70-generation Wrangler will then take its place, featuring electric and combustion-assisted electric powertrains. The REx system will first be introduced in 2025 with the Ram 1500 REV, a pick-up truck based on the STLA Frame platform, which is expected to underpin the electric Wrangler as well.

Ultra-Strong Platform and Capabilities

The new Wrangler and other upcoming Jeeps will sit on an ultra-strong platform known as the STLA Frame. This body-on-frame platform is designed to prioritize payload and towing capabilities. For example, the Ram 1500 REV claims an impressive 1224kg payload and a 6350kg towing capacity, surpassing competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning.

The STLA Frame platform is also capable of accommodating large batteries to meet the high mileage and heavy workload demands of commercial vehicles. The Ram 1500 REV will offer two long-range electric powertrain options, featuring 168kWh and 229kWh batteries that provide ranges of 350 miles and 500 miles respectively.

Future Electric Jeep Models

Jeep has already provided glimpses of its electric future with the Magneto 3.0 concept, a Wrangler-based off-roader boasting an impressive 641bhp and 900lb ft of torque. Additionally, before the electric Wrangler hits the market, Jeep plans to introduce the Recon, a rugged electric SUV based on Stellantis’s more road-focused STLA Large platform. The Recon promises comparable off-road capabilities while targeting a slightly lower segment of the market than the Wrangler.

With these upcoming electric models, Jeep aims to maintain its reputation for capability and adventure while embracing sustainable and efficient powertrains.
