JLR brings back Freelander name for new electric car range

JLR to Introduce New Range of Electric Cars Under Revived Freelander Name

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is set to bring back the Freelander name for a new line of electric vehicles in China, with plans for global distribution. The collaboration with joint venture partner Chery will see the production of these “mainstream” EVs in China, with the intention of expanding their reach worldwide.

Building on the existing partnership with Chery, which currently manufactures popular models like the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, JLR aims to strengthen their product offering by introducing a range of bespoke electrified models under the Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) brand in Changshu, China.

The new Freelander EVs are designed to cater to a mainstream audience and will initially be exclusive to the Chinese market. However, JLR has confirmed plans to eventually export these models globally. While specific details on markets and timelines have not been disclosed, the company is optimistic about the prospects for these electric vehicles.

CEO Adrian Mardell expressed enthusiasm for the strategic move, emphasizing the commitment to China and the potential for growth in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market. The collaboration with Chery is seen as a significant step towards establishing a strong presence in China and beyond.

Technical specifications for the Freelander EVs have not been revealed, but reports suggest that they will utilize platforms shared with Chery’s premium brand Exeed. These platforms are capable of accommodating plug-in hybrid powertrains, aligning with Chery’s innovative ‘Super Hybrid’ PHEV drivetrain technology.

As part of a broader trend among western car manufacturers, JLR’s partnership with Chery reflects a strategic approach to tap into the Chinese market by leveraging local expertise and dedicated vehicle platforms. The revival of the Freelander name for electric vehicles marks an exciting new chapter for JLR’s expansion into the world of sustainable mobility.
