JLR invests £10m to prevent thefts of older Range Rover models

JLR Invests £10 Million to Upgrade Security of Older Cars

JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) has made a significant investment of over £10 million to enhance the security of its older car models in response to high theft rates. The decision comes after JLR CEO Adrian Mardell acknowledged the growing problem of vehicle theft, particularly in cities like London and Manchester. Insurers have even started refusing coverage for Range Rover owners due to the increased risk of theft.

Upgraded Security for Previous-Generation Range Rovers

Range Rover models were the second most stolen cars in the UK last year, with over 5200 reported thefts. Mardell identified older-generation cars as being particularly vulnerable to theft. As a result, JLR has upgraded the security of more than 65,000 cars built between 2018 and 2022, including those out of warranty, to provide the same level of protection as current models.

Quick Update for Owners

JLR is urging owners of the remaining affected vehicles to visit a dealer or book an appointment with a mobile technician to have the security update installed. This approach is aimed at expediting the process and ensuring that a large number of cars receive the necessary upgrade. However, JLR acknowledges that there are still outstanding updates that need to be completed.

Preventing Keyless Entry System Hacking

Thefts were primarily carried out by hackers who exploited the keyless entry system. However, JLR’s update to the car’s body control module (BCM) eliminates this vulnerability. While car keys no longer need to be stored in a Faraday pouch, JLR recommends using the JLR app to access features such as vehicle lock reminders and Guardian Mode, which alerts owners to any unauthorized interaction with their vehicle.

Continued Commitment to Security

JLR’s investment in improved security also includes ensuring the correct transfer of log-in details for the InControl app to new owners. JLR UK managing director Patrick McGillcycuddy emphasizes the company’s commitment to addressing vehicle theft and protecting their clients. JLR collaborates with law enforcement and key partners to develop and deploy effective anti-theft measures.

Impact on Insurance

The high rate of theft has had an impact on insurance premiums for Range Rover owners. However, JLR expects the situation to improve as the security updates are rolled out. The company is actively engaging with UK insurance companies to provide them with information on their security systems and the latest theft statistics.

Despite the insurance issue, Range Rover remains one of JLR’s best-selling models, with over 51,000 units sold this year. The Range Rover Sport closely follows with 41,637 units sold. The Land Rover Defender, introduced in 2020, has been JLR’s top-selling model, with over 81,000 sales.

JLR’s investment in upgrading the security of its older car models demonstrates its commitment to addressing the issue of vehicle theft. By implementing these security updates, JLR aims to provide peace of mind to its customers and reduce the risk of theft for their vehicles.
