Introduction

Next year, a new Indian-built JLR model will be launched, based on a new platform developed by parent company Tata Motors. This platform will also be used for a “high-end” Tata model. Both cars will be manufactured in a brand-new factory in India, with plans to export them to other markets.

Cost Attitude and Design Sophistication

Tata Group boss Natarajan Chandrasekaran stated that the collaboration between Tata Motors and JLR allows for the combination of Tata Motors’ cost attitude with JLR’s design sophistication. This synergy benefits both companies and justifies the investment in the platform. Chandrasekaran expressed ambitious goals for both JLR and Tata Motors.

Badge and Powertrain

The specific badge and powertrain details for the new JLR model have not been confirmed. However, it is unlikely to be electrified due to India’s reliance on combustion engines. As a result, the initial sales are expected to be limited to Asian markets. Export to regions where JLR is promoting electrification will require a strong business case.

JLR’s Presence in India

JLR has been manufacturing cars in India since 2011, with the Pune factory assembling Land Rovers and Range Rovers from knock-down kits for the local market. The new Indian-built JLR model will join the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, and Discovery Sport in the Indian market.

Asian and Chinese Demand

JLR’s decision to produce cars in India was driven by the increasing demand from Asian and particularly Chinese customers. China became JLR’s largest retail market in 2019, with 104,123 sales. To meet this demand, JLR has partnered with Chery JLR in China to produce a range of plug-in hybrid and electric cars under the revived Freelander moniker. Export plans for these models have already been discussed.

When approached for comment, JLR declined to provide details about future products.
