Kia EV3: Next-Gen Soul Successor with 400-Mile Range | Giga Gears

Kia’s electric vehicle lineup is expanding with the introduction of the new EV3. This compact, city-focused electric car is set to be the smallest model in Kia’s EV range, leaving room for a future EV4 between it and the Sportage-sized EV5.

The EV3 is expected to be a B-segment (compact) model, similar to the existing Niro EV and Soul EV. It will serve as an indirect successor to the Soul EV, offering improved range, charging times, and functionality thanks to its bespoke electric Hyundai Motor Group platform.

Riding on an EV-specific platform will also result in tangible improvements in cabin space and packaging. The EV3 is likely to feature hidden storage cubbies, flat-folding rear seats, and a bench-style front seat. It may even have a small front trunk or “frunk” for additional storage.

While the EV3 is designed for urban use, it will still adopt Kia’s Opposites United design ethos, featuring blocky styling, chunky plastic cladding, distinctive LED light signatures, and a bold “tiger face” front end. The prototype of the EV3 showcases its striking flat-faced wheel designs, which promote aerodynamic efficiency while injecting a hint of rugged appeal.

Kia’s parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, has confirmed that it will launch models on its new eM platform for passenger EVs starting in 2025. The eM platform is specifically developed for EVs across all segments and promises a 50% improvement in driving range compared to current EVs. It is also being designed to support level-three or higher autonomous driving technology and over-the-air software updates.

The eM platform could potentially offer more than 400 miles of official range on a single charge. However, it is unclear whether it will accommodate 800V rapid-charging hardware like the e-GMP structure used by Hyundai’s and Kia’s latest EVs.

Pricing will be a crucial factor for the EV3’s positioning in the market. Competing against models like the Jeep Avenger, Mini Aceman, and Peugeot e-2008, Kia may reserve top-level charging and performance for its larger, more expensive EVs to keep the EV3’s pricing accessible.

The eM platform will also introduce a standardized approach to component sharing across model lines. By standardizing batteries and electric motors, Hyundai Motor Group can efficiently expand its lineup and offer common components across each vehicle.

Furthermore, a new integrated vehicle controller unit will allow for more systematic and efficient software upgrades for each car. This will enable Hyundai and Kia to tailor their models to specific global markets, offering bespoke features and varying performance.

The EV3 is part of Kia’s Plan S electrification strategy, which aims to launch 11 new EVs by 2027. It is expected to be unveiled late next year and hit the market in 2025.

With the introduction of the EV3, Kia is further solidifying its commitment to electric mobility. This compact, city-focused electric car will offer improved practicality and range, making it an attractive option for urban dwellers looking for an eco-friendly and efficient mode of transportation. Keep an eye out for more updates on the Kia EV3 as it gets closer to its official launch.
