Mad Mike’s Mazda3: A Rotary RWD Monster for Pikes Peak

Mad Mike’s 1,400 Horsepower Rotary-Powered Mazda3 Takes on Pikes Peak

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the most challenging and prestigious motorsport events in the world. The 12.42-mile course features 156 turns and climbs 4,720 feet to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. It’s a test of skill, bravery, and engineering, and this year, Formula D driver Michael “Mad Mike” Whiddett is taking on the mountain in a Mazda3 unlike any other.

The Mazda3 is powered by a 4-rotor Wankel engine, a unique powerplant that has been a staple of Mazda’s performance cars for decades. But this is no ordinary rotary engine. With twin Garrett G40 turbos and a host of other modifications, it produces a staggering 1,400 horsepower. That’s enough to propel the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds and reach a top speed of over 200 mph.

But power is only part of the equation when it comes to conquering Pikes Peak. The course is unforgiving, with steep inclines, tight hairpin turns, and unpredictable weather conditions. To tackle these challenges, Mad Mike’s Mazda3 has been extensively modified with a custom widebody kit designed by Mazda themselves.

The kit includes a massive front splitter, a chassis-mounted rear wing, and an enormous rear diffuser. These aerodynamic elements work together to generate downforce and keep the car planted to the road at high speeds. And while most Mazda3s are front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, this one is rear-wheel drive, which allows for better weight distribution and more precise handling.

Of course, all the power and aero in the world won’t help if the driver isn’t up to the task. Fortunately, Mad Mike is one of the most skilled drivers in the world, with years of experience in drifting and other high-performance motorsports. He’s no stranger to Pikes Peak, either, having competed in the event several times before.

This year, Mad Mike is aiming to set a new record for a rotary-powered car at Pikes Peak. The current record is held by Rhys Millen, who piloted a 4-rotor Mazda RX-7 to a time of 9 minutes and 46 seconds in 2011. Mad Mike’s goal is to beat that time and show the world what a rotary-powered Mazda3 can do.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place on June 27th, and Mad Mike’s Mazda3 will be one of the most anticipated entries in the race. Whether he sets a new record or not, there’s no doubt that his car will be one of the most impressive and unique machines on the mountain. And for fans of Mazda and rotary engines, it’s a testament to the brand’s commitment to pushing the limits of performance and innovation.
