Maserati Retires Quattroporte and Levante, Embracing V6 and Electric Power

Maserati has officially retired its iconic Quattroporte saloon and Levante SUV, marking the end of the Italian luxury brand’s V8 era. This follows the earlier retirement of the smaller Ghibli model. The three vehicles were all based on the M156 platform, developed during Fiat’s ownership of Maserati, and were manufactured at the Mirafiori factory alongside the new Maserati Granturismo and Fiat 500e.

These models were the last to feature the twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre ‘F134’ V8 engine, which was designed by Ferrari. The Quattroporte Grand Finale, a custom-built car for a US-based owner, served as the final tribute to this iconic engine.

Maserati’s current lineup now consists of three core models: the Granturismo and Grancabrio, the Grecale SUV, and the MC20 supercar.

The company stated, “Maserati is in a transition period towards electrification with its Folgore BEV program. Currently, Maserati offers the Granturismo and Grancabrio in ICE and BEV versions, the Grecale in ICE, mild-hybrid, and BEV versions, and we confirm that successors of the Quattroporte and Levante are also in preparation.”

The next new product launch from Maserati is expected to be the electric-only Levante, as the electric Quattroporte has recently been delayed until 2028.

Davide Danesin, chief engineer of the Quattroporte and Granturismo, revealed that development of the electric Quattroporte was halfway complete before the delay. He emphasized the importance of creating a car that is “outstanding from any perspective,” with a particular focus on achieving an EV range of over 600km (373 miles).

Despite the challenges, Maserati remains committed to becoming an all-electric brand by 2028.

The retirement of the Quattroporte and Levante comes after Carlos Tavares, chief of parent company Stellantis, expressed concerns about Maserati’s financial situation and threatened the possibility of selling the brand if improvements were not made.

Stellantis later released a statement affirming its commitment to all its brands and acknowledging that temporary situations may cause fluctuations in the market.

Maserati recognizes the challenges ahead and remains focused on its objectives in the coming months.
