Honda and Acura Recall Nearly 250,000 Vehicles Over Engine Seize Concerns

Honda Engine Seize

Introduction

Honda, known for its high-revving engines, is facing a major recall due to the risk of engine seizure. The automaker is recalling approximately 248,999 vehicles in the United States, including cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs. This recall is a result of a poorly engineered crankshaft that could cause the engines to seize.

Affected Vehicles

The vehicles affected by this recall include:

  • 2018-19 Honda Odyssey
  • 2016 and 2018-19 Honda Pilot
  • 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgeline
  • 2015-20 Acura TLX
  • 2016-20 Acura MDX

While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall notice does not specify which powertrains are affected, all five vehicles share the common 3.5-liter V6 engine built by Honda in the United States.

The Issue

According to correspondence between the NHTSA and American Honda, a manufacturing error led to the production of crankshafts with incorrect rod journal specifications. These faulty journals could result in inadequate lubrication, leading to engine damage and potential seizure.

Recall Process

Honda became aware of the issue in 2020 and has received 1,450 warranty claims related to it. Starting in January of next year, owners will be notified and asked to bring their vehicles to a dealership for inspection. If the engine is found to be faulty, it will be repaired with a correctly specified crank or replaced entirely.

Conclusion

This recall highlights the importance of addressing manufacturing errors promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of vehicles. Honda and Acura owners should stay informed and take the necessary steps to have their vehicles inspected and repaired to prevent potential engine seize incidents.
