Mazda Settles Class Action Lawsuit Over Defective Valve Stem Seals

Recently, Mazda has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit in the U.S. concerning faulty valve stem seals that have led to excessive engine oil consumption in certain 2021 and 2022 models nationwide.

Compensation for Affected Customers

The lawsuit alleged that defective valve stem seals in Mazda vehicles can cause engine oil to leak into the combustion chambers, resulting in increased oil consumption. As part of the settlement, Mazda will compensate eligible customers for oil changes and oil expenses.

Details of the Settlement

While the exact amount of the settlement has not been disclosed, owners of affected vehicles who have received a ‘Low Engine Oil Level’ warning message before the recommended oil change interval may qualify for benefits. The settlement also includes a reimbursement for past oil change expenses and additional engine oil purchases between intervals.

Impacted Models

The class action lawsuit involves current and former owners and lessees of various Mazda models, including the 2021 Mazda 3, 2021-2022 Mazda3, 2021-2022 CX-30, 2021 Mazda6, 2021 CX-5, and 2021 CX-9. All these vehicles are equipped with Mazda’s 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Claim Submission and Deadline

Owners and lessees of affected models can submit a claim for compensation by providing necessary documentation by October 19, 2024. Mazda will also extend the powertrain warranty for impacted vehicles as part of the settlement.
