Mazda MX-30 EV Discontinued in America: What Went Wrong?
The Mazda MX-30 EV, the brand’s first electric vehicle, has been officially discontinued in the United States. Mazda has decided to shift its focus to hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, including the CX-50 Hybrid, CX-90 PHEV, and the upcoming CX-70 PHEV. However, it came with a tradeoff—a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that provided an EPA estimated range of only 100 miles (161 km). In comparison, the Chevrolet Bolt, which starts at $26,500, offers a significantly longer range of 259 miles (417 km) on a single charge. Moreover, the Chevrolet Bolt is eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, making it a more attractive option for potential buyers.
Underwhelming Performance
In addition to its limited range and higher price, the MX-30 EV also lacked power. Equipped with an electric motor producing 143 hp (107 kW / 145 PS) and 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) of torque, the MX-30 EV fell short in terms of performance. However, it did have a distinctive design and featured cork accents that paid homage to Mazda’s heritage as a cork manufacturer. The MX-30 EV also came well-equipped with heated front seats, a moonroof, an 8.8-inch infotainment system, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go.
Availability of Remaining 2023 Models
Although the MX-30 EV has been discontinued for the 2024 model year, there are still a few remaining 2023 models available at Mazda dealerships.
