Introduction

Mazda is set to introduce a striking new electric saloon, the EZ-6, to the European market. This electric vehicle will directly compete with the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3.

Unveiling at Beijing Motor Show

The EZ-6 was first unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year. It serves as the electric successor to the Mazda 6 and is manufactured by Changan Mazda, Mazda’s joint venture partner in China.

Expansion into Global Market

Mazda has recently signed an agreement with Changan Mazda for the export of electric vehicles. This agreement designates Changan Mazda as Mazda’s exclusive Chinese new energy R&D and production base for the global market. As a result, the EZ-6 will be Mazda’s first global new energy vehicle and will be launched in China and Europe starting from autumn this year.

Possible UK Launch

While a decision has not been made yet, there are indications that the EZ-6 may be launched in the UK as part of Mazda’s global push.

Expanding Mazda’s Electric Vehicle Lineup

Mazda currently offers only one electric vehicle in Europe, the MX-30 compact SUV. However, the EZ-6 has the potential to significantly increase Mazda’s electric vehicle sales, as it competes directly with popular EVs like the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and BMW i4.

Pricing and Import Tariffs

Although pricing details have not been disclosed, it is important to note that Chinese-built electric cars are subject to significant import tariffs in the EU. Changan-built cars, including the EZ-6, will incur duties of 20.8%. Therefore, the EZ-6 is unlikely to be positioned as a value alternative to mainstream contenders.

Technical Details

The EZ-6 is based on Changan’s modular platform called ‘EPA’, which is also used for the Deepal SL03 saloon in China. This platform can accommodate pure-electric and range-extender drivetrains, as well as Level 4 self-driving functionality. Initially, the EZ-6 will be limited to level 2.5 self-driving capabilities, which require constant human supervision.

The EZ-6 will be available as a pure-EV with a 218bhp rear motor and an estimated range of 373 miles. Alternatively, it can be chosen as a range-extender (REx) with a claimed total range of around 745 miles. It is unclear if both powertrain options will be available in all markets.

Driving Pleasure and Performance

Mazda emphasizes that despite being electric, the EZ-6 still delivers the same driving pleasure as its gasoline-powered counterparts. The company has leveraged its expertise in dynamic performance tuning to ensure an enjoyable driving experience. The EZ-6 features a 50:50 weight distribution, multi-link rear suspension, and an electric rear spoiler for enhanced high-speed stability.

Luxurious Interior

The interior of the EZ-6 follows the minimalist and luxurious design approach seen in many Chinese-market EVs. It offers touch and voice control functionality, with a dominant 14.6-inch infotainment screen and haptic switches on the steering wheel for physical controls.

Future Plans

Alongside the EZ-6, Mazda and Changan also revealed the Arata concept at the Beijing Motor Show. This concept previews an upcoming SUV model that will be produced on the same platform. However, there are no confirmed plans yet to sell the Arata outside of China.
