Mazda MX-30 R-EV with Giga Gears

The Mazda MX-30 electric crossover has received an interesting update to address its limited range. Mazda has introduced the Mazda MX-30 R-EV, a range-extended plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with a rotary engine under the bonnet. However, unlike traditional rotary engines, this one acts as an electricity generator only and does not directly drive the wheels. The pure electric version of the MX-30 will continue to be available for sale alongside the new PHEV option.

The MX-30 R-EV is equipped with a 17.8kWh battery, which is half the size of the pure electric version’s battery. As a result, it has an electric-only range of 53 miles. The vehicle offers various drive modes that allow users to deplete the battery as an EV, run as a hybrid to a preset battery level, or maintain and charge the battery at any increment from 20% to 100%.

Mazda is known for its success with rotary engines, which feature a triangular-shaped rotor spinning around a central output shaft within a fixed oval-shaped block. This unique design creates three combustion chambers as the rotor spins, allowing each chamber to complete one combustion cycle per turn. The MX-30 R-EV is equipped with a single-rotor generator with a combined 830cc capacity between the three chambers. While it may not produce the famous noise associated with rotary engines, it offers advantages such as being lighter, more compact, and smoother than equivalent four-stroke engines.

The rotary engine and the drive motor are both located transversely beneath the bonnet. The engine serves as a generator and produces 74bhp, while the electric drive motor generates 168bhp. In hybrid mode, the engine and generator assist the electric motor during hard acceleration to make up for any power deficit. This results in a 0-62mph time of 9.1 seconds, slightly faster than the pure electric version of the MX-30.

Despite the complexity of the drivetrain, Mazda has made it easy for drivers to operate. Users can simply set the desired drive mode and start driving, whether it’s as an EV for daily commutes or with the backup range for longer trips. The MX-30 R-EV offers shift paddles to adjust the retardation level and delivers a smooth and electrically-powered driving experience. The occasional distant mid-range whirr of the rotary engine adds a unique touch to the overall driving experience.

In terms of efficiency, the MX-30 R-EV falls somewhere between a pure EV and a traditional combustion engine car. The electric range of 53 miles translates to under 3 miles per kilowatt-hour (mpkWh), while maintaining a constant battery level yields around 34 miles per gallon (mpg). While it may not be the most efficient option on the market, the MX-30 R-EV offers convenience and versatility for those who prioritize range and flexibility.

The Mazda MX-30 R-EV shares the same trim levels and prices as the pure electric version, with slight variations in the top trim. However, it has an exhaust CO2 emission of 21g/km and an 8% benefit-in-kind tax rate, compared to the 2% rate of the pure electric version. With prices starting from £31,250, the MX-30 R-EV offers a relatively affordable option for those looking for a plug-in hybrid with extended range capabilities.

Mazda recognizes that the electric MX-30 is a niche choice due to its size, rear door configuration, and small battery capacity. However, it has found that those who appreciate its unique features are highly satisfied with their choice. The introduction of the plug-in hybrid version will expand the appeal of the MX-30 range while maintaining its endearing oddity.

In conclusion, Mazda has addressed the limited range of the MX-30 electric crossover by introducing the MX-30 R-EV, a range-extended plug-in hybrid with a rotary engine acting as an electricity generator. The new PHEV option offers a 53-mile electric-only range and various drive modes for flexibility. While it may not be the most efficient option, it provides convenience and versatility for those who prioritize range and convenience. With its unique design and features, the MX-30 R-EV adds to Mazda’s legacy of successful rotary engines and offers an alternative choice for consumers in the electric vehicle market.
