Mazda, known for its unique approach, is set to join other manufacturers in the push for fleetwide electrification by 2030. However, the company is hesitant to introduce forced induction to the MX-5 roadster, as it believes it would compromise the lightweight and naturally aspirated nature of the sports car.

Special Editions to Boost Sales

In an interview with Australia’s CarsGuide, Mazda MX-5 Program Manager Shigeki Saito revealed that the current ND model of the Miata will see a series of special editions. This strategy aims to capitalize on the model’s potential discontinuation or significant changes in the future, enticing buyers with limited edition variants and collectability.

Mazda plans to follow Dodge’s playbook with the Challenger and Charger, leveraging the devoted fanbase of the MX-5. By creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity, Mazda can release custom models at higher prices, appealing to enthusiasts who believe it may be their last chance to own one.

Saito stated, “We are already planning [special editions] to make something very cool — we are already thinking about cool special editions.” Previous generations of the MX-5 have also received fan-favorite special editions, further increasing the model’s appeal.

Maintaining the MX-5’s Essence

Mazda is cautious about making significant changes to the MX-5, as it prioritizes driving engagement and fun. While some customers desire more power, Mazda must carefully consider how modifications would affect the vehicle’s balance and characteristics. Upgrading the powertrain could necessitate additional changes, impacting the vehicle’s price.

Mazda also aims to keep the MX-5 lightweight and has reservations about electrifying the roadster without exceeding its current weight of 2,400 pounds. Saito mentioned that advancements in battery technology may be necessary to achieve the desired curb weight of 2,204 pounds for the next Miata. This could result in an interim model, potentially a hybrid, before the fully electrified successor is ready.

While the industry’s electrification plans remain uncertain, Mazda intends to keep the ND model for as long as possible while meeting regulatory requirements. Saito emphasized the company’s commitment to satisfying compliance and hinted at future developments.
