Mercedes CLA Estate, EQA, EQB: New Models on MMA EV Platform

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch four new compact cars on its new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, including the next-generation successors to the EQA and EQB SUVs, as well as a Shooting Brake version of the forthcoming CLA. The new platform has been developed with a focus on electric powertrains, featuring an 800V architecture that allows for faster charging and different battery chemistries.

The first vehicle to sit on the new MMA platform will be the CLA, which was previewed at the 2023 Munich motor show with a concept version boasting an impressive range of 466 miles. Mercedes boss Ola Källenius described the CLA as “the forerunner to an entirely new portfolio of electric-first vehicles” and stated that it marks the start of a new era for the company.

The new MMA platform will replace the existing MFA architecture, which was initially developed for combustion-engined cars and later adapted for electric vehicles. Christoph Starzynski, Mercedes’ vice-president for electric vehicle architecture, confirmed that the two new SUVs on the MMA platform will serve as replacements for the current GLA and GLB models.

Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener revealed that the forthcoming compact SUVs and Shooting Brake will feature family design cues seen on the Concept CLA. While they will share key styling themes, Wagener emphasized that each car will have its own iconic character and identity, avoiding a “Russian dolls” approach where every car looks like the CLA.

The new MMA platform brings several advancements in terms of electric powertrains. The 800V architecture enables faster charging times, allowing drivers to spend less time waiting for their vehicles to charge. Additionally, the platform can accommodate different battery chemistries, providing flexibility in terms of battery options.

With a range of 466 miles, the CLA concept aims to rival Tesla’s Model 3 in terms of electric range. This impressive range is made possible by the advanced technology and engineering of the MMA platform. Mercedes has made it clear that they are committed to delivering electric-first vehicles, and the CLA is just the beginning of their new era.

In addition to the CLA, Mercedes will introduce three other models on the MMA platform: a four-door coupé, a shooting brake, and two stunning SUVs. These models have been developed from scratch by Mercedes’ engineers and designers, with the goal of elevating every aspect of what customers expect from the brand.

The compact SUVs and Shooting Brake will not only offer exceptional performance and range but will also feature cutting-edge design. Mercedes aims to create vehicles that are not only visually appealing but also have their own unique character. By incorporating iconic elements while maintaining diversity in the front end, Mercedes ensures that each car stands out and makes a statement.

Overall, the introduction of the new MMA platform marks an exciting chapter for Mercedes-Benz. With a focus on electric powertrains and advanced technology, these new compact cars promise to deliver exceptional performance, range, and design. As Mercedes embraces an electric-first approach, customers can expect a new era of innovative and sustainable vehicles from the renowned automaker.
