Mercedes-Benz Expands Luxury Electric Car Lineup with New EQE SUV

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its latest electric car, the EQE SUV, adding to its growing family of luxury electric vehicles. The EQE SUV is based on Mercedes’ Electric Vehicle Architecture and offers familiar features found in the EQE and EQS models. The UK market will have three dual-motor, four-wheel-drive options available, with power outputs ranging from 288bhp to 469bhp. The SUV boasts a sleek and aerodynamic design, making it Mercedes’ most aerodynamically efficient SUV to date. It comes in standard and sporty AMG Line packages, with a variety of alloy wheel options.

The EQE SUV shares similar dimensions with the combustion-engined GLE, but it is narrower and lower. The interior design is reminiscent of the EQE saloon, featuring high-quality materials and a digital instrument display and infotainment touchscreen. The spacious cabin offers ample legroom and headroom, with a 520-litre boot capacity that can be expanded by adjusting the rear backrest.

In terms of performance, the entry-level EQE 350 offers strong acceleration but is not overwhelming. The drivetrain is refined and smooth, and the car’s shape minimizes wind noise and buffeting. The EQE SUV is equipped with a disconnect unit that reduces energy consumption by disconnecting the front motor at low speeds. It also features a heat pump for improved efficiency in cooler weather. With an 89kWh battery, the EQE 350 SUV offers a range of up to 342 miles and can be charged at 22kW or 170kW.

The EQE SUV comes with standard steel-sprung suspension or optional Airmatic air suspension for adjustable ride height and self-leveling. The comfortable ride quality is complemented by precise steering and optional rear-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability. Sport mode adds weight to the steering and firmness to the ride, improving interaction and body control. However, the braking action lacks feel and has an unusual movement due to the energy-regeneration function.

While the EQE SUV’s towing capacity is modest, its off-road capability is notable. It offers 169mm of ground clearance, which can be increased with an optional Off-Road pack. Additionally, an optional “transparent bonnet” function displays the terrain beneath the vehicle on the touchscreen.

Overall, the EQE SUV is a likeable and easy-to-live-with car, with its positives outweighing any negatives. It is considered Mercedes’ best electric vehicle yet, although it comes with a high price tag of £99,260.
