Mercedes-Benz Upgrades Plug-In Hybrids for Extended Range

Mercedes-Benz is set to enhance the longevity of its plug-in hybrid A-Class, B-Class, and CLA models with larger batteries and increased electric-only range. This decision comes after lower-than-expected sales of electric vehicles prompted a shift in planning at the German car manufacturer.

Extended Battery Life

Starting in September, all compact Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrid models will be equipped with a 13kWh battery, replacing the current 11.6kWh version. The new battery, with the same casing and volume as the previous one, will boost the electric range by approximately six miles in each model. This upgrade is expected to push the electric range of the A250e hatchback beyond 60 miles, along with improvements in other models like the B250e, CLA 250e saloon, CLA 250e Shooting Brake, and A250e saloon.

Regulatory Changes

The decision to enhance the plug-in hybrids aligns with recent changes in Germany’s car leasing laws, which require an increase in electric range or a reduction in CO2 emissions to meet specific tax thresholds. This shift has also led to plans to increase the battery capacity of the electric-powered EQA 350 4Matic and EQB 350 4Matic models. These vehicles will receive a 70.5kWh battery, providing the EQA 350 4Matic with a WLTP range increase from 285 to 296 miles and the EQB 350 4Matic from 277 to 289 miles.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz’s decision to upgrade its plug-in hybrids reflects a strategic response to market demands and regulatory changes, ensuring that their vehicles remain competitive and compliant with evolving standards.
