Mercedes SUV Recall: Stalling and Pedal Break Risk for 105,000 Vehicles

Mercedes Recalls SUVs Over Safety Concerns

Transmission Issue in GLE and GLS Models

Mercedes has issued two separate recalls for SUVs due to safety concerns. The first recall involves the transmission in select GLE and GLS models. Specifically, vehicles from the 2020-2023 model years equipped with the six-cylinder engine and the nine-speed automatic transmission are affected. In the U.S., a total of 105,071 vehicles are impacted, including 32,308 GLE 450s and 72,763 GLS 450s.

Identifying the Problem

Mercedes first became aware of the transmission issue in March 2022 but struggled to pinpoint the problem until May 2023. After analyzing data from numerous vehicles in the field, the automaker traced the complexity of the issue back to the SUV’s transmission software.

Stalling Risk for GLE Drivers

The investigation revealed that the issue occurs when a vehicle shifts from seventh gear down to sixth. If this downshift is attempted while the transmission fluid temperature is low and the 48-volt starter-alternator is recuperating, the engine can stall, leaving the driver without power and potentially vulnerable to rear-end collisions.

Resolution and Next Steps

To address this issue, Mercedes has developed software to prevent stalling under these circumstances. Starting April 16, the company will contact owners to bring their GLEs and GLSs to a nearby dealer for a free software installation.

Second Recall for GLE Models

In addition to the transmission recall, Mercedes has issued another recall affecting fewer vehicles but posing a significant risk. The recall involves a welding issue on the pedal assembly in the 2024 GLE350, GLE450, and AMG GLE53 models, where accelerator and brake pedals could fracture and break.

Resolution Process

Mercedes will contact owners of the 466 affected vehicles to return them to a dealer for a fix. Technicians will drill through the problematic spot welds and install a bracket with rivets to ensure pedal safety.

By addressing these safety concerns promptly, Mercedes aims to ensure the well-being of its customers and maintain its commitment to vehicle safety.
